Loïc Le Dé

Associate Professor, Auckland University of Technology, Aotearoa, New Zealand

Loïc is an Associate Professor in the School of Public Health and Interdisciplinary Studies at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). Loïc coordinates the Master of Disaster Risk Management and Development. He also leads the ‘inclusive urban community’ stream of the Resilience to Nature Challenge. He is a member of AUT Pacific Health Research Centre.

Loïc’s research is driven by the gaps in policy and practice he sees through his on-going engagement in disaster risk reduction activities in collaboration with local communities, government authorities and NGOs in New Zealand and the Pacific Island Countries. Over the past 13 years, his research has focused on bridging the knowledge and actions gaps between local communities and external aid agencies. This is indispensable to achieve sustainable disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. In recent years Loïc worked on the development of participatory tools for disaster risk management, transnational community support in disaster, community-based disaster response and sustainable recovery post-disaster. In recent years he has focused on how to better support transnational remittances towards the Pacific island region in the face of disasters, explored ways for children to have more voice in disaster preparedness and climate change adaptation such as through participatory mapping and technology, and on developing community-centred resilience indicators with Emergency Management groups from different parts of Aotearoa New Zealand.
