CARP webinar Experience in Disaster Assessment Methodology
Dr Ricardo Zapata Marti
September 11, 2024
This webinar is led by Ricardo Zapata-Marti, an International Consultant with extensive experience in disaster management and climate change adaptation. This session will explore the Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) tool, focusing on its origins, validation, and its critical role in assessing the impacts of various disaster contexts, including natural and climate-related phenomena, conflict and peacebuilding, and health crises like pandemics. The discussion will include examples from Africa and other regions, illustrating how the PDNA has been adapted to different disaster contexts. Additionally, the webinar will highlight the tool’s application in establishing adaptation and mitigation costs, referencing its use in climate change research and analysis, including the IPCC 2007 report.
Gender Mainstreaming in Disaster Risk Reduction
Eunice Wangui Mwangi, Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD)
Wednesday, July 10, 2024
This webinar will focus on gender issues in dryland ecosystems in the eastern and southern Africa region, which are inhabited by vulnerable communities with limited capacities to adapt to climate change. Eunice Mwangi from the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) in Nairobi, Kenya, will focus on opportunities presented in gender policy frameworks, cascading from the global to the local family unit level, and how cultural barriers can be overcome to empower women to adapt to climate change. In her presentation, Eunice will also discuss the role of institutions in promoting women’s involvement in STEM through inclusive education systems and research development.
Using Remote Sensing to Support Decision Making in Government Institutions
Mr. James W. Nyaga, Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development
Wednesday, June 12, 2024
Drought and floods are the most prevalent hazards in East and Southern Africa, especially Kenya and Malawi. The number of exposed people has continued to rise as climate change is affecting weather systems and making them more unpredictable, causing frequent extreme events, and making them more severe. In 2019, Malawi was severely affected by Cyclone Idai and in 2023 by Cyclone Freddy. In late 2023 and early 2024, typically dry seasons were dominated by rainfall systems that caused nationwide destruction and human loss.
